Kira Kira Cricket Association Launches Third Annual Junior Cricket Competition

The sound of excitement filled the air as young voices once again filled Kira Kira Village as the Kira Kira Cricket Association Inc officially launched its third annual Junior Cricket Competition, marking another important milestone in grassroots sports development within the Motu Koita Constituency of the National Capital District.

Now in its third consecutive year, the competition continues to gather momentum, reflecting the Association’s long-term commitment to nurturing young talent and strengthening its pathway toward formal affiliation with Cricket PNG. The junior competition remains a cornerstone of this vision, laying the foundation for sustainable cricket development at the community level.

Building Community, Equality, and Healthy Futures

The school holidays in Kira Kira Village have never been more exciting! The Kira Kira Junior Cricket Competition brought together children from across the community for a fun-filled celebration of sport, teamwork, and inclusion. Cricket is more than just a game, it’s a powerful tool for promoting social interaction, physical health, and community spirit. By engaging kids in structured activities, we help them stay active, stay heathy learn discipline, and develop friendships that last a lifetime.

This year’s tournament features two inclusive and forward-looking categories designed to encourage broad participation and gender balance. The Under-10 division adopts a mixed-team format, with boys and girls playing side by side, reinforcing teamwork and equality from an early age. Meanwhile, the Under-15 competition places a strong emphasis on female participation, with each team required to field a minimum of four female players, ensuring meaningful involvement and opportunity for young girls in the sport.

Breaking Barriers: Girls and Special Needs Inclusion

For the first time, the Kira Kira Junior Cricket Competition has taken a bold step toward gender equality and inclusivity. Girls and persons with special needs were invited to participate, breaking down barriers and creating a level playing field for everyone. This initiative has truly “pulled down the curtains” on outdated stereotypes, proving that cricket is a sport for all.

Behind the scenes, the competition is being led by a dedicated organising committee, with Mr Charlie Gavera serving as Competition Director, supported by Mr William Harry as Deputy Director and Mr Banaga Mado, Executive for Junior Development Programs. Their efforts are complemented by a committed team of match officials, including Mr Leka Daure, Mr John Baida, Mrs Shirley Baida, Mr Sam Oala, Mr Eava Lamond, and Mr Peni Loa, whose contribution ensures the smooth running of matches throughout the tournament.
