Port Moresby — The NCD Junior Rugby League Competition is preparing for the start of its 2026 season, with matches expected to kick off in March. Organisers say the official venue will be confirmed in the coming weeks as final preparations continue.

Widely regarded as one of the most impactful youth sporting platforms in the nation’s capital, the NCD Junior Rugby League plays a vital role in grassroots rugby league development. The competition engages boys and girls from underserved communities across Port Moresby, offering structured opportunities outside the traditional school system.

The competition is overseen by Joel Talman, who serves as Competition Director and Chairman of the NCD Junior Rugby League.

“Our vision is to empower the next generation through rugby league,” said Mr. Talman. “This competition provides opportunities for children who may not be part of school-based rugby, and helps develop their skills, discipline, and confidence from a young age.”

2026 Season Structure

The 2026 season will feature two main divisions designed to cater for different age groups and skill levels.

This division focuses on fun, safety, and basic skill development, introducing young players to teamwork, movement, and the fundamentals of the game.

Section 2: Junior Competition (Under 14 to Under 18)
A more competitive format aimed at improving match awareness and advanced gameplay, open to both boys and girls.

Objectives of the Competition

The NCD Junior Rugby League aims to:

  • Provide a clear pathway to elite rugby league from the community level
  • Support youth development beyond formal school-based programs
  • Encourage increased female participation in rugby league
  • Promote discipline, healthy lifestyles, and positive community values
  • Create future opportunities as Papua New Guinea prepares for the inclusion of the Team PNG Chiefs in the NRL in 2028

The competition is registered with Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League and has also lodged its application with the Investment Promotion Authority. It operates under a formal constitution to ensure strong governance and the protection of all participants. “We’re not just building athletes,” Mr. Talman added. “We’re building leaders and giving hope to kids who just need a chance to shine.” The competition is registered with Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League and has also lodged its application with the Investment Promotion Authority.
