A Legacy of Care: From Clinic to National Institution

Dr Robin Sios explains medical things to the Medical team of Paradise Private Hospital.

Paradise Private Hospital’s story is deeply woven into the social and medical history of Papua New Guinea, reflecting decades of continuous service, evolution, and commitment to care.

The hospital’s origins date back to 1959, when the country’s first private medical clinic was established in Port Moresby on the very site where Paradise Private Hospital now stands. Founded during the pre-independence era, the clinic evolved through successive generations of medical leadership, each contributing to its growth and reputation at a time when private healthcare was still in its infancy in Papua New Guinea.

A defining milestone came in 1984, when the facility transitioned from a clinic into the country’s first private hospital, setting a new benchmark for private healthcare delivery. Over the following decades, the hospital steadily expanded its services, capacity, and professional expertise, earning the trust of families who have relied on its care across generations.

The New Location for one of Paradise Private Hospital In 2014, after nearly three decades of shared ownership and partnership, Professor Glen Mola and Dr Misi Lam stepped aside and sold their shareholding to the remaining partner, Dr Robin Sios, and his wife, Janet Sios. This marked a major milestone for the hospital, which became Papua New Guinea’s first fully nationally owned private hospital. Under the ownership and leadership of Dr Sios (OBE) and Mrs Sios, the institution entered a new era of local stewardship, long-term investment, and national pride. Today, the hospital remains a standout example of a home-grown private healthcare provider that has grown sustainably while staying firmly grounded in community values.

From its Taurama Road location in Port Moresby, the hospital now operates as a modern multi-service facility, supported by a growing workforce of medical, clinical, and corporate professionals delivering round-the-clock care. Its expansion has been guided by a clear strategic outlook focused on quality, efficiency, and responsiveness to Papua New Guinea’s changing health needs.

Beyond infrastructure and services, Paradise Private Hospital’s identity is anchored in purpose. Guided by a vision of shaping the future of healthcare and a mission grounded in excellence, compassion, and innovation, the hospital places patient care at the centre of every decision. Its values emphasise inclusion, teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement, principles that shape both clinical practice and organisational culture.

Equally important is the hospital’s role beyond its walls. Through community engagement and partnerships, Paradise Private Hospital recognises that improving health outcomes extends beyond treatment alone. Advocacy, education, and collaboration form part of its broader contribution to building healthier communities.

From its humble beginnings to its position today as a respected national healthcare institution, Paradise Private Hospital’s journey mirrors Papua New Guinea’s own development story, one defined by resilience, local leadership, and a long-standing commitment to serving the people of this country.
